I Know that IM war is so 99 when it was AIM VS MSN VS ICQ VS yahoo all over the web.
When Google launched Google talk back in 2005 everyone was surprised both from the move and the slim features that the app had (and still has).
2 years later and there are more and more people using Gtalk. (i believe they have more users then ICQ)
Google found a great way to make sure you use Gtalk using their killer web app Gmail with Gtalk.
Now when ever users sign in to Gmail they see there GTalk friends online and his/her Gmail frequent contacts. (all that with out installing application).
I believe that Gmail with Gtalk will eventually be the winner in the IM war.
And it's a great lesson in Product managment.
